Augmented Reality – What is it and who’s using it

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality (AR) is a term you’ve probably heard by now, or will very soon. The definition is ‘a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.’ Confused? It’s actually pretty simple. AR displays a computer-generated model of an object through your mobile device so you can see what it looks like in real life. An image of a couch so you can see it in your living room before you buy it, a paint color on your wall before you actually paint it.

It’s being used in many different ways. Keep reading to learn more about it.

Who’s Using it?

Many brands have jumped in head first, ever heard of Snapchat? Pokemon Go? Apple built it into their new iOS, Ikea is using it to help you see what furniture will look like in your home, American Airlines is working on a prototype that overlays real-time information on your mobile device, helping you find your way around the terminal.

Augmented Reality is starting to blur the line between real life and the digital world.

Enhancing your shopping experience

There are many retail brands at the forefront of the AR. Of course, Amazon is using it. Similar to the way Ikea uses AR, Amazon has AR View, allowing you to place almost anything you can think of in your home before you even buy it. Lowe’s decided to use AR along with geolocation in their mobile app in what they claim is the first retail application of indoor mapping using augmented reality

The cosmetic and beauty world is jumping in too. Sephora is using AR as a way to apply makeup….virtulally.

Augmented Reality Games

Pokemon Go is arguably the most popular AR game. Launching in the summer of 2016 it took the world by storm. You couldn’t go anywhere without seeing someone hunting for those little creatures.

How about tabletop games? Yes, you can now sit around a table with your friends and play a tabletop game through your mobile device. Let’s face it, almost everyone is staring at their phones anyway. At least this way they are virtually interacting with each other.

Augmented Reality Meets Art

Yes, Augmented Reality even reached the world of art and it’s being used in very creative ways. Think about a beautiful piece of art, it makes you think, smile, feel happy or even sad. What was the artist thinking whey they created it? What if you could actually watch the artist create it? Well, you can!

Soundwave Art App Take world-renowned artist Derek Gores. If you scan this piece with the Soundwave Art™ mobile app (iOS or Android) you will see Derek creating it.

Just think of what an artist could create if they were given the opportunity to bring their art to life with the use of Augmented Reality? Animation, time-lapse, hidden messages. Artists are creative and with the use of AR, they have an entirely new way to enhance their art.

AR is here to stay and we love it so much we got into the Augmented Reality game!
